Five key focus points for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Develop a successful EDI culture
First let’s clarify what EDI means; most people are aware of the term, but may not have had much opportunity to consider what impact it has on their day to day life, or on their work…but right now, EDI is a very hot topic in the media – and global political unrest seems to show that it will remain a conversation point for some time!
EDI – Equality, Diversity and Inclusion – is one of the key points of focus for any organisation to build a culture that gives every person the same access to success.
Equality
This means that everyone has equal and equitable opportunities, all are respected and valued for their individual experiences and knowledge, and are protected from being discriminated against. It’s important to note that equality doesn’t always mean “access to the same tools” – it means “access to the same outcomes” which can also be called ‘Equity’.
Diversity
A diverse team recognises and respects differences in people; culture, community, identity, race, gender, all aspects of who we are shape how we develop – and how we perform. The more diverse your team is, the more varied their experiences, their expertise, their knowledge and education, and their insight into pathways to organisational success.
Inclusion
This means that everyone – no matter their identity or background – is incorporated into their workplace, and in society. Inclusion shapes the extent to which they feel valued and included by their peers and, for those in minority groups, might require more deliberate steps to demonstrate that inclusion.
